Overview
When you join the Minnehaha Academy softball program, you join a family. Minnehaha has a long tradition of fielding hard-working, competitive, and successful softball teams. Along with improving softball skills and learning the finer points of the game, the main goals of the softball program each year are developing excellent team chemistry and forging long-lasting friendships. The team concept begins with middle school clinics for 6th-8th graders run by our current high school players and coaches. It is our sincere hope that to get younger players excited about the game of softball to continue the tradition.
Several of our graduates have gone on to have successful careers at Division III softball programs including Bethel University, Gustavus Adolphus College, Hamline University, Luther College, North Park University, Bates College, and St. Olaf College.
Minnehaha Softball Team Culture
Minnehaha softball is built on a culture that is both joyful and purposeful. We believe athletes grow best in an environment where they feel supported, encouraged, and free to take risks.
Our program is designed to be a safe place to fail—where mistakes are seen as part of the learning process, not something to fear. Players are challenged to stretch themselves, try new things, and grow in confidence without the pressure of perfection.
At the same time, we intentionally create a fun and lighthearted atmosphere. We celebrate one another, build strong relationships, and enjoy the game together.
Within that environment, every athlete knows they are supported—by coaches who care deeply about their development and by teammates who encourage and lift each other up.
Growing as a Softball Athlete
At Minnehaha, growth as a softball athlete is intentional and relational. Many of our Middle School players develop over time into key contributors, starters, and even team captains at the Upper School level—reflecting the strength of our long-term approach to player development.
We actively foster connection between Middle School and Upper School athletes, creating a unified program rather than separate teams. Younger players benefit from early exposure to the program’s expectations, while older players step into meaningful leadership roles.
Beyond skill development, this connection builds confidence, character, and a sense of belonging. Upper School athletes serve as strong role models—demonstrating what it looks like to compete, lead, and support one another both on and off the field.
Coaching Emphasis
Our coaching approach centers on both individual development and healthy team culture. We are committed to helping each athlete grow in skill, confidence, and understanding of the game.
We create an environment where players are encouraged to ask questions, stay curious, and take ownership of their development. Open communication is a key part of our program—athletes are not just coached, but actively engaged in the learning process.
This balance of development and connection helps athletes grow not only as softball players, but as teammates and leaders.
Competition Level
The level of competition varies from year to year as our roster develops, and we are currently a younger team building toward the future.
Even so, our focus is on steady growth and preparing our athletes to compete at a higher level. As players gain experience and confidence, we are intentionally working toward stronger competition and more consistent performance.
Softball & Faith Integration
Faith is an important part of the Minnehaha softball experience.
Before each game, a captain or team leader leads the team in prayer. These moments create space for athletes to center themselves and remember who they are playing for.
Throughout the season, our athletics chaplain also invests in the team, offering encouragement, conversation, and spiritual support. Athletes are invited to grow not only in their skills, but in their faith and character.
This integration of faith and athletics helps shape players into confident competitors, supportive teammates, and young women grounded in something greater than the game.
Softball Team Traditions
We typically have a tournament or two, a few team dinners, last year we went to a twins game. We celebrate victories with ice cream quite often. It varies every year, but we do some intentional team bonding every season.
Our team traditions are centered on building relationships and creating a sense of belonging.
Each year, we intentionally set aside time for team bonding—whether through tournaments, team dinners, or enjoying a Minnesota Twins game together.
We also celebrate the small and big moments together. After wins, you’ll often find us enjoying ice cream—a simple tradition that reflects the joy we have in playing and growing as a team.
