What Kind of Leader Will You Be? The Minnehaha Leadership Institute (Pt. 2)

Amy Barnard

A leadership training program that is also discipleship-based, the Minnehaha Academy Leadership Institute aims to shape students into servant-leaders. Check out Part 1 for an introduction to this idea.

The Minnehaha Academy Leadership Institute is broken down into three tracks: Athletic Leadership Track, Community Leadership Track, and the Fellows Leadership Track. Following is an explanation of how each track functions.

Athletic Leadership Track

Who
Captains encouraged but not required to apply, other athletes welcome

Meets
Breakfast meetings twice a season, athletes can take part in the track each season they play

Growth Challenge
Students explore six character traits related to athletic leadership. They then pick one or two "Captain's Cards" to focus on for the season. Each card includes one trait, examples of MA community members who exemplify the trait, and advice along with a game plan for practically walking it out.

The group reconnects midway through the season for check ins and encouragement.

Community Leadership Track

Who
Juniors and seniors who are campus interns

Meets
Breakfast meetings every month for one school year, additional meetings within intern groups

Growth Challenge
Interns explore one attribute of servant leadership each month, looking at examples of this trait in Jesus' life and ministry. They then discuss how they can apply the focus attribute in their work as campus interns.

Mentorship
Internships are led by an MA staff or faculty member who meets with students at other times during the month, engaging them in the month's topic.

Fellows Leadership Track

Who
Interested sophomores can apply

Meets
Breakfast meetings twice a month for three years

Growth Challenge
Students explore the questions: Who is Jesus? Who am I? What is my calling? They read mentor texts and scripture, explore apologetics, spend time in small group discussion, and take part in a wide variety of practical activities.

Mentorship
Each student is paired with a mentor and in their junior year mentor a younger student.

Boundary Waters Trip
Students take part in a Boundary Waters Leadership Experience hosted by Adventurous Christians.
